Earthworks: a Major Challenge for Infrastructure and the Environment

Welcome to this special issue on Earthworks, and thanks to PIARC for dedicating a part of this Routes/Roads magazine, to it. Earthworks and Earthworks Structures, which are their consequences, are often neglected or ignored in many reflections on infrastructure. However, these Earthworks constitute the majority of the world’s infrastructures (80% of the infrastructures is made up of Earthworks). Earthmoving is the art of reusing the materials of the site to make an infrastructure at a reasonable price, and to constitute the support of the road and the surroundings of the Structures and Tunnels. Without earthworks, there is no infrastructure.
